Ferris State IELTS levels by programme
From Ferris State's English proficiency policies. The page sets one IELTS overall score and no band minimums.
| Programme | IELTS | Other tests |
|---|---|---|
| Undergraduate | 6.5 | TOEFL iBT 79 (or 4 new scale); Duolingo 105; PTE 50; SAT Reading and Writing 510; ACT Reading 19; ELS 112 with C or better |
| Graduate | 6.5 | TOEFL iBT 79 (or 4 new scale); Duolingo 105; PTE 54 |
School qualifications and waivers
The policy accepts IB English Language, English Literature, Philosophy or Psychology at 4 or higher; A-level English or another reading and writing subject such as History at C or higher; Cambridge AS English at B; O Level English at B; IGCSE English at B (5); GCSE English at 6; or CEFR B2.
Citizens of listed English-speaking countries, including Canada, Australia, Ireland, the UK, New Zealand and Singapore, may not need proof. So may applicants with two years at a US high school or an IB high school, one semester of US college credit, or two years at an international school taught mainly in English.

Placement on arrival
Ferris may require an additional English placement test on arrival if a student's English does not appear to match the submitted scores. The policy names no separate English pathway apart from ELS Level 112 for undergraduates.
The US F-1 student visa sets no English test score of its own. What counts is the university's admission requirement, which leads to your Form I-20. For the wider picture, see IELTS for the USA.
Requirements vary by programme and change between admission cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your Ferris State programme page and in your admission letter, so check it there before you book a test.
Minimum vs competitive score
Where Ferris State University publishes an IELTS score, it is the minimum: the floor an application has to meet to be considered, not a score that guarantees an offer.
Competitive programmes, and courses with far more applicants than places, may expect more than the minimum, and some departments set their own overall or per-skill scores, often for writing or speaking. The course page has the final word, so check it before you book a test.
If you are close to the line, aim for a margin above it: one weak skill can miss the requirement even when the overall band clears it. Not sure where you stand? Take a free IELTS mock test and get a band for each skill.
