What TOEFL score do you need for Gannon University?

Gannon treats the TOEFL figure as the level below which ESL courses are required. Students who do not submit evidence of minimal English proficiency can test on arrival and, if necessary, enrol in Gannon's ESL programme. Gannon says students from listed English-speaking countries, such as Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, Singapore and the United Kingdom, will probably not need ESL courses, and other countries with an English-language tradition are considered case by case.

TOEFL iBT score reports issued since January 2026 also carry a 1 to 6 band score alongside the 0 to 120 total; see our guide to the new TOEFL score scale. Where a page above gives only a 0 to 120 figure, that is the figure this guide reports.

For comparison, the same page sets IELTS at 6.0.

A score below 79 means taking ESL courses. Gannon also accepts other measures, including PTE 53, Duolingo 110, iTEP 3.8, A-level English at C, completion of ELS Level 112, SAT Critical Reading 500, ACT English 21 and IB English at 5.

Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your Gannon programme page and in your offer letter, so check it there before you book a test.
