GGU English requirements by level
From GGU's international students admission page. The page gives overall scores only and notes that home editions of TOEFL and IELTS are accepted.
| Programme | IELTS Academic | Other tests |
|---|---|---|
| Graduate | 6.5 | TOEFL iBT 79, PTE 57, Duolingo 110, iTEP Academic 3.8 |
| Undergraduate | 6.0 | TOEFL iBT 60, PTE 48, Duolingo 90, iTEP Academic 3.5 |
Alternatives to a test score
The page lists several alternatives. They include English 1A and 1B (or equivalent) at a regionally accredited US institution with a B+ or better, a bachelor's or master's from a regionally accredited US institution or an equivalent from another English-speaking country, credits or a degree from an accredited English-medium institution, and APIEL scores of 3 (undergraduate) or 4 (graduate). Undergraduates can also use three years of high school in the US or another accepted English-speaking country.
Work experience counts too, but the page gives two figures: its FAQ says five years of documented employment in the US or a country where English is official, while another section says seven years of professional experience. Ask admissions which applies. A dean or the Provost can also waive the requirement, and GGU reserves the right to ask any applicant for more testing.

English conditional admission
English Conditional Admit students must complete the required courses at a partner school before starting their programme. The listed partners are the Intercultural Institute of California, EC English and the English Language Institute in San Francisco, Language Pacifica in Palo Alto and the Silicon Valley Intensive English Program in Redwood City.
Requirements vary by programme and change between admission cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your GGU programme page and in your admission letter, so check it there before you book a test.
Minimum vs competitive score
Where Golden Gate University publishes an IELTS score, it is the minimum: the floor an application has to meet to be considered, not a score that guarantees an offer.
Competitive programmes, and courses with far more applicants than places, may expect more than the minimum, and some departments set their own overall or per-skill scores, often for writing or speaking. The course page has the final word, so check it before you book a test.
If you are close to the line, aim for a margin above it: one weak skill can miss the requirement even when the overall band clears it. Not sure where you stand? Take a free IELTS mock test and get a band for each skill.
