Other tests and exemptions

The Malaysia programme pages say IELTS "or equivalent" and do not print TOEFL, PTE or Duolingo scores, so ask admissions which equivalent they will take for your course.

Heriot-Watt's university-wide English language requirements page accepts IELTS Online and IELTS One Skill Retake, does not accept IELTS Indicator or General Training, and wants results from within two years of your start date. It also lists SPM English at CEFR B2 with no component below B2 (within five years) as proof, and exempts nationals of majority English-speaking countries.

Pre-Sessional English at the Malaysia campus

The Pre-Sessional English Programme runs for 10 weeks at 20 hours a week. Entry is IELTS 4.5 for the Lower Intermediate level and 5.0 for Intermediate. The current run is 8 June to 14 August 2026, with results on 21 August 2026. Students then sit an external test (PTE Academic, IELTS or TOEFL) to move on to their degree.

Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your Heriot-Watt Malaysia programme page and in your offer letter, so check it there before you book a test.

Minimum vs competitive score

Where Heriot-Watt University Malaysia publishes an IELTS score, it is the minimum: the floor an application has to meet to be considered, not a score that guarantees an offer.

Competitive programmes, and courses with far more applicants than places, may expect more than the minimum, and some departments set their own overall or per-skill scores, often for writing or speaking. The course page has the final word, so check it before you book a test.

If you are close to the line, aim for a margin above it: one weak skill can miss the requirement even when the overall band clears it. Not sure where you stand? Take a free IELTS mock test and get a band for each skill.
