University English requirements

What IELTS score do you need for Hokkaido University?

Hokkaido University has two English-taught undergraduate routes. The Modern Japanese Studies Program (MJSP) asks IELTS Academic 6.5 or TOEFL iBT 79 (4.5 on the new scale) for 2028 entry. The Integrated Science Program (ISP) asked IELTS 6.0, TOEFL iBT 79 or Duolingo 110 in its 2026 guidelines. Four years of English-medium schooling replaces the test for both.Source: Hokkaido University official English requirements · checked 29 October 2026

Hokkaido English minimums by programme

From the MJSP 2028 enrolment guidelines (published 31 July 2026) and the ISP 2026 enrolment guidelines:

Test rules and waiver

Both programmes waive the test for applicants with four years or more of secondary or higher education taught mainly in English; studying English as a subject does not count. Scores must be from within two years of the online registration deadline, and only TOEFL test date scores are accepted, not MyBest.

MJSP assesses every applicant's English through documents and an interview, including native speakers.

MJSP timeline and fees

For 2028 entry, MJSP's first call opened on 27 October 2026 and closes on 4 November 2026, with a second call from 2 to 9 February 2027. Admitted students start a six-month Intensive Japanese Course in October 2027 and the four-year degree in April 2028; JLPT N2 holders can apply to skip the course. The guidelines list a JPY 5,000 application fee, JPY 282,000 enrolment fee and JPY 535,800 yearly tuition, with first-year fees waived for April 2028 entrants.

Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your Hokkaido programme page and in your offer letter, so check it there before you book a test.

Minimum vs competitive score

Where Hokkaido University publishes an IELTS score, it is the minimum: the floor an application has to meet to be considered, not a score that guarantees an offer.

Competitive programmes, and courses with far more applicants than places, may expect more than the minimum, and some departments set their own overall or per-skill scores, often for writing or speaking. The course page has the final word, so check it before you book a test.

If you are close to the line, aim for a margin above it: one weak skill can miss the requirement even when the overall band clears it. Not sure where you stand? Take a free IELTS mock test and get a band for each skill.
