How many mistakes can you make for band 7 in IELTS Writing?

IELTS sets no number. The official band 7 Writing descriptor says 'a few errors in grammar may persist, but these do not impede communication', error-free sentences are frequent, and there are 'only a few errors in spelling and/or word formation'. Examiners judge the density and effect of errors, not a count, and the script must fit all the positive features of band 7.

What the band 7 descriptor says about errors

Quoted from the ielts.org Writing band descriptors (updated May 2023). The wording is the same in the Task 1 and Task 2 descriptors for these two criteria.

CriterionBand 7 wording on errors
Grammatical Range and AccuracyGrammar and punctuation are generally well controlled, and error-free sentences are frequent. A few errors in grammar may persist, but these do not impede communication.
Lexical ResourceOnly a few errors in spelling and/or word formation, and they do not detract from overall clarity. An awareness of style and collocation is evident, though inappropriacies occur.
Coherence and CohesionCohesive devices are used flexibly but with some inaccuracies or some over/under use. A few lapses may occur.

How band 6 and band 8 compare

Grammar at band 6: 'errors in grammar and punctuation occur, but rarely impede communication', and complex structures are less accurate than simple ones. At band 8: 'the majority of sentences are error-free' and errors are 'occasional, non-systematic' with minimal impact (descriptors).

ielts.org's key assessment criteria say Grammatical Range and Accuracy assesses 'the density and communicative effect of grammatical errors', and Lexical Resource does the same for spelling and word formation. So two essays with the same number of slips can score differently if one set blocks meaning.

Errors are one criterion of four

Accuracy alone does not give band 7. Range matters too: band 7 grammar needs 'a variety of complex structures' used with some flexibility, and band 7 vocabulary needs 'some ability to use less common and/or idiomatic items'. A short, error-free essay of simple sentences does not fit that.

The descriptors note that 'a script must fully fit the positive features of the descriptor at a particular level' (ielts.org). Read all four criteria in our Writing band descriptors guide.
