Where the official Writing descriptors are
The authority is the official IELTS Writing band descriptors PDF, marked "Updated May 2023" and linked from the IELTS scoring in detail page. IELTS also publishes a shorter Writing key assessment criteria note explaining what each criterion covers. Everything on this page is our own plain-English summary, not the official text.
There is one Writing descriptor for Task 1 and one for Task 2. Task 2 is identical for Academic and General Training. Task 1 has a single descriptor with separate lines under Task Achievement for the Academic report and the General Training letter; the other three Task 1 criteria read the same for both.
Task 1 and Task 2 criteria side by side
Three criteria are shared. Only the first one changes between the tasks, and it is the one that decides whether you did what the task asked.
| Criterion | Task 1 | Task 2 |
|---|---|---|
| Task-specific | Task Achievement: the right information, accurately selected and complete | Task Response: the question answered in full, with a clear and developed position |
| Coherence and Cohesion | Logical order, grouping and linking | Logical progression, paragraphing and linking |
| Lexical Resource | Range, precision, collocation and spelling | Range, precision, collocation, register and spelling |
| Grammatical Range and Accuracy | Variety and accuracy of structures and punctuation | Variety and accuracy of structures and punctuation |
| Weight in the Writing band | One third | Two thirds (counts double) |

Task Achievement vs Task Response
Task Achievement in the Academic report is about selection and accuracy. IELTS calls Academic Task 1 an information-transfer task (key assessment criteria): you pick out the key features, give a clear overview of the main trends or differences and support them with figures, without speculating beyond the data. In practice, a missing overview often keeps a report at band 5 or 6.
Task Achievement in the General Training letter is about the three bullet points, the purpose and the tone. Each bullet has to be covered and developed, the reader must be able to tell why you are writing, and the register has to suit the person you are writing to from greeting to sign-off.
Task Response in the essay is about the question itself. You must answer every part of it, take a position the reader can identify and keep it consistent, and develop your main ideas with explanation and examples instead of listing them.
Band 7, 6 and 5 at a glance
Most candidates are working between band 5 and band 7, so this table compares those three levels criterion by criterion. It is our own summary; the detailed guides linked below cover every band from 9 to 4.
| Criterion | Band 7 | Band 6 | Band 5 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Task Achievement (Academic report) | Clear overview, data grouped sensibly, key features highlighted | Overview attempted, key features covered with figures, some details wrong or missing | Detail reported mechanically, no clear overview, figures may be missing |
| Task Achievement (GT letter) | Every bullet covered, clear purpose, consistent tone | All bullets adequately covered, purpose mostly clear, tone may wobble | All bullets present but some underdeveloped, purpose unclear in places |
| Task Response (essay) | All key parts answered, position clear and developed throughout | Main parts answered, some ideas underdeveloped, conclusion may be vague | Only part of the question covered, position gets lost, ideas thin |
| Coherence and Cohesion | Clear progression, flexible linking, one focus per paragraph | Organised but linking often mechanical, paragraphs not always focused | Some organisation, order not fully logical, connectors overused or missing |
| Lexical Resource | Some less common words used with control, good collocation | Adequate range, meaning clear, word choice sometimes imprecise | Limited range, repetitive, noticeable spelling or word-choice errors |
| Grammatical Range and Accuracy | Complex sentences used regularly, many sentences error-free | Mix of simple and complex sentences, errors rarely block meaning | Complex sentences attempted but usually go wrong, frequent errors |
How your Writing band is calculated
Each task is scored on its four criteria, which carry equal weight, and the task score is their average (ielts.org). The two tasks are then combined, with Task 2 contributing twice as much as Task 1 (Academic Writing format, General Training Writing format).
ielts.org does not publish the exact arithmetic or rounding for combining the two tasks. As an informal estimate only, a Task 1 at 6 and a Task 2 at 7 point to a Writing band around 6.5 to 7. The practical lesson is the weighting: a stronger essay moves your Writing band more than a stronger report or letter, so protect your 40 minutes for Task 2.
Rules that apply alongside the descriptors
From ielts.org: Task 1 needs at least 150 words and Task 2 at least 250. A short answer may not show enough for the higher bands; writing more is not penalised. Off-topic answers and answers written as notes or bullet points are penalised, and plagiarism is severely penalised (Academic, General Training).
From the Writing descriptors PDF: a response of 20 words or fewer is rated band 1, wording copied from the question is not counted, and band 0 is kept for no attempt, an answer entirely in another language, or an answer proven to be completely memorised.
Detailed band-by-band guides
Writing Task 2 band descriptors explains every criterion for the essay from band 9 to 4. Academic Writing Task 1 band descriptors covers graph, chart, map and process reports. General Training Writing Task 1 band descriptors covers the letter. For Speaking, see the Speaking band descriptors, and for how both skills fit together, the band descriptors overview.
Where practice essays lose marks
In BandLadder practice data (895 scored Task 1 and Task 2 responses), Grammatical Range and Accuracy was the lowest or joint-lowest criterion in 84% of responses, and 56% scored below band 6. Task 2 essays under 200 words averaged band 3.9, against 5.8 at 250 to 299 words; stronger writers also write more, so that is an association, not a rule. Full tables are in IELTS Writing statistics.
Check one essay against the descriptors
Write a Task 2 essay in 40 minutes, then review it one criterion at a time. Underline your position and check that every body paragraph supports it; mark each linking word and ask whether it is needed; circle words you repeated; and count how many sentences are fully correct.
For a second opinion, paste the essay into the free IELTS Writing checker, which scores it on the same four criteria and shows which one is lowest. That is a practice estimate for one response, not an official IELTS score. Fix the weakest criterion, rewrite the essay and compare. Model answers are in the Task 2 sample essays.
Frequently asked questions
What are the four IELTS Writing criteria?+
Task Achievement (Task 1) or Task Response (Task 2), Coherence and Cohesion, Lexical Resource, and Grammatical Range and Accuracy. They are weighted equally within each task.
Does Task 2 count more than Task 1?+
Yes. ielts.org says Task 2 contributes twice as much as Task 1 to the Writing band.
Are the Writing band descriptors the same for Academic and General Training?+
Task 2 is identical. Task 1 uses one shared descriptor, with separate Task Achievement lines for the Academic report and the General Training letter.
Where can I download the IELTS Writing band descriptors PDF?+
From the IELTS scoring in detail page on ielts.org, which links the Writing band descriptors PDF (marked Updated May 2023) and the Writing key assessment criteria note.
What is the difference between band 6 and band 7 in IELTS Writing?+
At band 7 the position or overview is clear and developed, paragraphs progress logically with flexible linking, some less common vocabulary is used with control, and many sentences are error-free. At band 6 the task is answered but ideas are less developed, linking is more mechanical and complex sentences contain more errors.
What happens if I write under the word limit?+
ielts.org sets 150 words for Task 1 and 250 for Task 2 and says a short answer may not show enough for the higher bands. A response of 20 words or fewer is rated band 1.
