What IELTS score do you need as a chiropractor in the UK?

The General Chiropractic Council (GCC) asks for English evidence case by case, for example when your chiropractic programme was not taught in English and you have not practised recently in an English-speaking country. Its guidance accepts a C1-level test such as IELTS with at least 7 in every component, passed within the six months before you apply.

GCC test scores

From the GCC's guidance on English language skills for applicants (June 2021). Where a test has academic and general versions, the GCC requires the academic one.

TestMinimum
IELTS (academic)At least 7 in every component
TOEFL95 total, with reading 24, listening 22, speaking 25, writing 24
Other testsMust equal CEFR C1 and cover all four skills

Two tests and other evidence

The GCC will consider two tests taken within six months of submitting to it, for example an IELTS with 6 to 7 in one component and 7 or more in the others, followed by a second test reaching 7 in that component.

Instead of a test, the GCC may accept a recent chiropractic qualification taught and examined entirely in English in a country where English is the first and native language (with at least 75% of clinical interactions in English), or at least two years of recent practice in such a country, evidenced by employer references or by the regulator there.

Test of Competence for unrecognised qualifications

If your chiropractic qualification is not recognised, you must pass the Test of Competence before the GCC can register you, and the English rules apply to Test of Competence candidates too. If six months pass after your test without registration, the GCC may look for further evidence that your English has not slipped. Regulators change these rules, sometimes at short notice. Confirm the current scores on the GCC page before you book a test.
