What IELTS score do you need as a dental hygienist in New Zealand?

For dental hygienists, oral health therapists, dental therapists, clinical dental technicians and dental technicians, the Dental Council of New Zealand (DCNZ) asks for IELTS Academic with an average score of 7 or more across listening, reading, writing and speaking. Unlike dentists, there is no 7 minimum in each band. The pass must come from one sitting.

DCNZ IELTS requirements by profession

From the DCNZ English language requirements and tests policy (last reviewed May 2024). The policy also lists OET as an approved test; check its table for the grades for your profession.

ProfessionIELTS Academic requirement
Dental hygienists, oral health therapists, dental therapistsAverage of 7 or more across the four components
Clinical dental technicians, dental techniciansAverage of 7 or more across the four components
Dentists and dental specialistsAt least 7 in each band

Who does not need a test

Graduates of a DCNZ accredited programme or a Dental Board of Australia approved programme normally meet the requirement. So do applicants whose first language is English and who trained in the UK, USA, Australia, Ireland or Canada with English as the sole language of instruction and assessment.

You can also rely on at least two years in the last five as a registered oral health practitioner in one of those countries, in an English-speaking practice, backed by two practitioners with English as their first language who worked with you for at least six months.

Test rules

A pass must be achieved in one sitting and is valid for two years. If you later apply for a new scope of practice, the Council may ask you to sit a test at the level required for that scope.

Regulators change these rules, sometimes at short notice. Confirm the current scores on the DCNZ policy page before you book a test.
