DCNZ minimum scores for dentists
From the DCNZ English language requirements and tests policy (last reviewed May 2024). The policy applies to all applicants for registration.
| Test | Dentists and dental specialists |
|---|---|
| IELTS Academic | At least 7 in each of listening, reading, writing and speaking |
| OET | A or B in each of the four components |
Who does not need a test
You normally meet the requirement without a test if you graduated from a DCNZ accredited programme or a Dental Board of Australia approved programme, or if English is your first language and you trained in the UK, USA, Australia, Ireland or Canada where English was the sole language of instruction and assessment.
Another route is at least two years in the last five working as a registered oral health practitioner in one of those five countries, in a practice where English is the primary language, plus attestations from two practitioners with English as their first language who worked with you for at least six months. This option is only available if there are no concerns about your English.

Test rules
The pass must be achieved in one sitting and is valid for two years. The Council can require proof of English at any time, including when you apply for a new scope of practice, and English problems reported after registration can lead to remedial training and a new test.
The policy does not mention PTE, TOEFL or IELTS One Skill Retake.
Regulators change these rules, sometimes at short notice. Confirm the current scores on the DCNZ policy page before you book a test.
