What IELTS score do you need as a dispensing optician in the UK?

The General Optical Council (GOC) lets dispensing opticians qualified outside the UK apply only if they have taken IELTS Academic (or IELTS for UKVI Academic) at an official test centre. You need 7.0 overall, at least 7.0 in speaking and no other section below 6.0. The GOC accepts no other English test, no online IELTS and no One Skill Retake.

The rest of the route

You start with a self-assessment form and must verify your qualifications through Qualification Check before you submit. Assessors map your qualifications and experience against the dispensing optician core competencies and may invite you to interview; you may need further academic training, then the theoretical examinations, a Pre-Qualification Period of 1,600 hours in practice and the professional qualifying examinations.

The GOC lists a £130 scrutiny fee, £455 for assessment and £205 for the interview, all non-refundable.

Regulators change these rules, sometimes at short notice. Confirm the current scores on the GOC page before you book a test.
