What IELTS score do you need as a lawyer in New Zealand?

Overseas lawyers and law graduates who apply to the New Zealand Council of Legal Education (NZCLE) must show they can communicate effectively in English. The test option is IELTS Academic with at least 7.5 in each of writing, speaking, reading and listening, completed within the last two years. A law degree taught in English while living in an English-speaking country is the main alternative.

What NZCLE asks for

From the NZCLE Assessment of Overseas Law Qualifications brochure (effective 1 July 2026), linked from its overseas qualifications page. The requirement exists so that applicants from countries where English is not the primary language can show they can cope with communication in New Zealand.

One Skill Retake and costs

NZCLE accepts IELTS One Skill Retake for individual parts of the test, but the 7.5 minimum must be achieved in the retake attempt itself.

You pay for the IELTS test or for any other way of satisfying the Council, and you include a certified copy of your IELTS result, or other English evidence, in the application. NZCLE does not name PTE, TOEFL or any other test.

The rest of the assessment

NZCLE also compares your degree with the four-year New Zealand LLB, and may require university papers, parts of the New Zealand Law and Practice Examination, and the Professional Legal Studies Course, which must normally be taken in New Zealand. The Council also has separate rules for qualifications that are more than 10 years old.

Regulators change these rules, sometimes at short notice. Confirm the current scores on the NZCLE page before you book a test.
