Minimum scores for skilled residence visas
This is Table 1 on INZ's English language requirements for skilled residence visas page (read 6 October 2026). It applies to the Skilled Migrant Category and also to the Straight to Residence, Work to Residence, Care Workforce and Transport Work to Residence visas. INZ sets overall scores only; it lists no per-skill minimum for IELTS, PTE or TOEFL.
| Test | Principal applicant | Partner or dependent child aged 16+ |
|---|---|---|
| IELTS General Training or Academic (One Skill Retake accepted) | 6.5 overall | 5 overall |
| PTE Academic | 58 overall | 36 overall |
| TOEFL iBT | 79 overall | 35 overall |
| B2 First or B2 First for Schools | 176 overall | 154 overall |
| OET (for health care professionals) | Grade C+ or higher in all 4 skills | Grade C or higher in all 4 skills |
Meeting the requirement without a test
The principal applicant can skip the test in three situations, with evidence:
Citizenship: you are a citizen of Canada, Ireland, the United Kingdom or the United States and have spent at least 5 years working or studying in one of those countries, or in Australia or New Zealand.
Bachelor's degree: a qualification comparable with a New Zealand level 7 bachelor's degree gained in Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, the United Kingdom or the United States, having lived there for at least 2 years while studying.
Postgraduate qualification: a qualification comparable with a New Zealand level 8 or above postgraduate qualification from the same six countries, having lived there for at least 1 year while studying. You may need an International Qualification Assessment. For skilled residence you cannot use a general "English-speaking background" instead (INZ).

Results must be no more than 2 years old (from the issue date) when you submit your application, and you cannot provide evidence of a future booking. At-home tests are not accepted. If you or someone in your application has an occupational registration eligible for points under the Points-based pathway, that person's test result can be up to 5 years old; the registration must be full, not provisional or limited (Skilled Migrant Category Resident Visa).
Principal applicants cannot use the English lessons option. A partner or dependent child aged 16 or older who misses the score can instead buy English lessons, chosen in the application form and paid if the visa is approved; a discount depends on their test scores. Children under 16 have no English requirement.
The visa itself is for applicants aged 55 or younger who submit an expression of interest and are invited to apply, and costs from NZD $6450 on INZ's page. If you are weighing IELTS against the higher Australian and Canadian bars, our IELTS for New Zealand overview compares study and migration routes.
Rules change, sometimes at short notice. Confirm the current requirement on the INZ skilled residence English page before you book a test or apply. This guide restates that page as read on 6 October 2026; it is not migration advice.
