What IELTS score do you need as a midwife in Ireland?

The Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI) asks midwives with qualifications from outside Ireland for IELTS Academic (or IELTS Academic for UKVI) with an overall 7.0, at least 7.0 in any three components and 6.5 in the fourth. OET is the alternative. NMBI accepts one test result only, not combined results, One Skill Retake or IELTS online.

NMBI minimum scores

From NMBI's English language requirements page, which applies to nurses and midwives qualified outside the EU. Under the online process, you show English proficiency at the registration stage (Stage 2), after your qualification has been recognised, and the test must be valid when you submit the registration application.

TestNMBI minimum
IELTS Academic or IELTS Academic for UKVI7.0 overall, 7.0 in any three components and 6.5 in one
OETGrade B (350 to 450) in three components and C+ (300 to 340) in one

Pathways that avoid a test

Pathway 1: your pre-registration midwifery qualification was taught and examined in English in an NMBI recognised country: Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the USA or the UK. For colleges in Quebec or New Brunswick, the college must confirm the qualification and placements were in English.

Pathway 2: you have three years of post-registration practice within the last five years in one of those countries. You need a letter or email from your employer or nursing authority showing the location, dates and job title.

Pathway 3 is the IELTS or OET test. NMBI considers other CEFR C1 evidence only from EU Directive applicants.

Test rules

Results must be less than two years old. NMBI verifies scores itself using your Test Report Form number or OET candidate number, which you give in the application.

NMBI accepts one test result only and does not accept combined results, IELTS One Skill Retake, IELTS online or OET at home. It says not to apply for registration until you meet the minimum scores, because the assessment fee is non-refundable.

Regulators change these rules, sometimes at short notice. Confirm the current scores on the NMBI page before you book a test.
