When you can skip the test

The May 2026 application handbook says you meet the requirement with an attestation on your Step 1 pre-registration application that you can communicate with reasonable fluency in English or French, plus one of: a transcript from a CNME-accredited naturopathy programme, a letter or transcript confirming your education (for PLAR) was in English or French, or a letter of standing from another Canadian regulator (labour mobility).

If you cannot meet those, you take an accepted test at your own cost. PLAR applicants who do not meet the requirement cannot move forward in PLAR until they do.

Rules for results and exemptions

The minimum must be met in all components in one complete sitting. Combined scores from more than one test, or from several sittings of the same test, are not accepted. Results are valid for two years from the date you pass and must be sent to the College by the testing agency; results sent by applicants are not accepted.

If you cannot meet the requirement but have other objective evidence (letters from regulated professionals or employers, supervised practice records), you can ask a panel of the Registration Committee for an exemption. A temporary exemption can come with terms, conditions or limitations, such as supervision. Regulators change these rules, sometimes at short notice. Confirm the current scores on the College of Naturopaths of Ontario page before you book a test.
