What IELTS score do you need as a speech-language pathologist in Ontario?

The College of Audiologists and Speech-Language Pathologists of Ontario (CASLPO) requires CLB 9 in every skill. On IELTS Academic or General Training that means 8.0 in listening and 7.0 in reading, writing and speaking, all from the same test, taken within two years before you apply. The same rule applies to audiologists.

Who must take a test

You meet the requirement without a test if you graduated from a programme accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Canadian University Programs in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology (CACUP), or if you completed your audiology or speech-language pathology professional master's degree in English or French. For the second route you need a credential assessment report that shows the language of didactic and clinical instruction, or an official attestation sent by the university.

Otherwise you need the minimum score on one approved test. All components must come from the same test, the test must be taken within the two years before you apply, and the results must be sent directly from the testing agency to CASLPO. For French, CASLPO lists TEF, TCF Canada and the OQLF test.

How to check before you book

CASLPO approves its tests under Ontario Regulation 508/22. It prints its TOEFL iBT minimums as 5 speaking, 5.5 listening, 4.5 reading and 4.5 writing; if you plan to use TOEFL, ask CASLPO which score scale these refer to. Regulators change these rules, sometimes at short notice. Confirm the current scores on the CASLPO page before you book a test.
