What ielts.org says
ielts.org says having an IELTS score may be necessary for registration with professional bodies where English competence is critical, that required levels vary by organisation, profession, country and jurisdiction, and that each body decides the band score and test type it requires (ielts.org). Its test-type page adds that you can take IELTS Academic for professional registration purposes (ielts.org). IDP says the same about bodies choosing the test type (IDP).
| Professions ielts.org names | Type of body |
|---|---|
| Nursing, medicine, pharmacy | Healthcare registration bodies |
| Accounting, engineering, law, veterinary practice | Other professional bodies |
How to check
Read the regulator's own English language page, or search ielts.org's who accepts IELTS list. Profession guides on this site cover specific bodies, for example IELTS for nurses in Australia.

Registration versus visa
A registration body and an immigration authority can ask for different tests. ielts.org points migrants to General Training and professional registration to Academic (ielts.org), so some applicants need to meet two rules.
