What IDP recommends
IDP says you only need a brief sentence so the letter ends smoothly rather than suddenly, and that it must suit the context: the line used in its complaint would not suit a letter of apology or a letter asking for information (IDP Australia). IDP's guide to letter features labels this line the 'rounding off statement' (IDP).
| Letter | Rounding-off line in IDP's sample | Closing |
|---|---|---|
| Formal complaint (Dear Sir or Madam) | Looking forward to a reply and a positive outcome | Yours faithfully |
| Informal letter to a friend (Dear Andrew) | Looking forward to catching up | Best wishes |
Keep it short
The rounding-off line is not a conclusion paragraph. ielts.org notes that a longer Task 1 can leave less time for Task 2, which counts twice as much (ielts.org). After the line, add the closing that matches your greeting; see Yours faithfully or Yours sincerely.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a conclusion in an IELTS letter?+
IDP's advice is one brief rounding-off sentence, not a full concluding paragraph.
Can I use the same final sentence in every letter?+
IDP says no: the line must suit the context, and a complaint's ending would not fit an apology or an information request.
What comes after the rounding-off sentence?+
The closing that matches your greeting, then your name. IDP's informal model ends with 'Best wishes' and a first name.
What if I end straight after the third bullet point?+
IDP says the letter then feels abrupt; a short final line helps the flow.
