The layout of IDP's model letter
IDP annotates its model informal letter part by part (IDP):
| Part | What goes in it |
|---|---|
| Greeting | Dear Andrew |
| Opening paragraph | The purpose of the letter |
| Body paragraph 1 | First bullet point |
| Body paragraph 2 | Second bullet point |
| Body paragraph 3 | Third bullet point |
| Rounding-off line | A short concluding sentence |
| Closing and name | Best wishes, then the writer's name |
How paragraphs are marked
The key assessment criteria list the appropriate use of paragraphing for topic organisation, and the logical sequencing of ideas within and across paragraphs, under Coherence and Cohesion for both Writing tasks. IDP's band 5 guide repeats that the main body should have paragraphs for each bullet point (IDP).

Why a paragraph per bullet helps
Task Achievement for the letter asks you to fully address the three bullet-pointed requirements and extend each one (key assessment criteria). Giving each bullet its own paragraph makes it easy for the examiner to see that all three are there. More on paragraphing in general: do paragraphs matter in IELTS Writing?
Frequently asked questions
Is there a required number of paragraphs?+
No official page sets one. IDP's model has an opening, three body paragraphs and a short closing line.
Should the purpose go in its own paragraph?+
IDP says the purpose should be clearly presented in the opening paragraph.
Can I put two bullet points in one paragraph?+
IDP's format guidance gives each bullet point its own paragraph, which shows the examiner that all three are covered.
Do I need a conclusion paragraph?+
IDP's model uses only a short rounding-off sentence before the closing, not a full conclusion.
