Do you get headphones in the IELTS Listening test?

On IELTS on computer, yes: IDP says you get individual headphones and can adjust the fit and volume yourself. On the paper test, Listening was often played over a loudspeaker, though some centres had headphones. IELTS Online at home is the opposite: you must use the speakers built into your computer, and headsets or earbuds are not allowed.

IELTS on computer

IDP says all equipment, including computers and headphones, is supplied by the test centre (IDP), and that there is a volume control bar in the upper right of the screen during Listening (IDP). IDP now says all IELTS tests are delivered on computer (IDP Community), so most test takers will have their own headset.

IELTS Online

For IELTS Online, an IDP expert says you need speakers and a microphone integrated into your laptop or desktop, and you cannot wear a headset or earbuds; a readiness check confirms your system before the test (IDP Community).

Whichever mode you take, tell staff straight away if the sound is not working, because the recording is played once only (ielts.org).
