What the sources say
Two official sources, two parts of the answer.
| Source | What it says |
|---|---|
| ielts.org Speaking format | The Speaking test is a face-to-face interview between the test taker and an examiner. The Speaking test is recorded. |
| IDP Speaking FAQ | The recording can be used to apply for a remark. It is also used to monitor the examiners to make sure they are doing their job well. |
| IDP Speaking FAQ | In IELTS Speaking, the person who examines you will give you a score as soon as you leave the room. |
Why the recording matters for a re-mark
IDP says the recording can be used if you apply for a re-mark. In an Enquiry on Results, ielts.org says test papers are re-marked by senior examiners, and the fee is refunded if your band score changes (ielts.org). More in our re-mark guide.

Recording yourself to practise
IDP suggests recording yourself while practising and sharing it with someone, who may notice things you don't (IDP). Compare your recording with the four official criteria: Fluency and Coherence, Lexical Resource, Grammatical Range and Accuracy, and Pronunciation (Speaking key assessment criteria).
Frequently asked questions
Is IELTS Speaking on computer recorded too?+
ielts.org states that the Speaking test is recorded, and IDP says Speaking on computer is the same as always, with a human examiner.
Can I get a copy of my Speaking recording?+
The official pages read for this guide do not offer candidates a copy. Ask your test centre if you need to.
Is the recording marked by AI?+
No. IDP says the examiner who interviews you gives the score; the recording is used for re-marks and to monitor examiners.
Does the recorder mean I should speak louder?+
Speak clearly at a natural volume. Pronunciation is judged on how easily you can be understood.
