Deadline and how to apply
The British Council says you must submit the EOR form in the Test Taker Portal within six weeks of the test date on your TRF (British Council). IDP India accepts EOR applications online only, from the EOR tab of your candidate login; it no longer takes paper applications (IDP India).
You can ask for any one section or all four. Each requested section is re-marked by a senior examiner who does not know your original score; the British Council says a re-mark can leave a score unchanged but never lowers it (British Council).
IELTS re-mark fee (India example)
Fees are set by country and centre. The British Council does not publish one global fee; it says fees vary by test centre (British Council). IDP India publishes the following 2026 EOR fees, including taxes (IDP India fee page):
Fees and policies are set per country and test centre, and they change. Check the page for the country where you will sit the test before you book or pay. This guide is general information, not official IELTS advice.
| Test (IDP India) | EOR fee 2026 |

ielts.org says the fee is fully refunded if your band score changes (ielts.org). The British Council says it is refunded if your score improves in any section (British Council), and IDP India says you get a full refund if the result changes to a higher band (IDP India). If nothing changes, the fee is kept.
How long does an IELTS re-mark take?
Anywhere from the same day you apply up to 21 days, depending mainly on how many sections you ask to be re-marked. If the mark changes, the centre issues a new TRF. If you have heard nothing after 21 days, contact your centre (ielts.org; the British Council gives 2–21 days, British Council).
Re-mark or retake? If you took IELTS on computer and one skill is clearly short, a One Skill Retake within 60 days is the other route; at IDP India it costs INR 12,650 against INR 14,250 for an EOR (IDP India). A re-mark only makes sense if you believe the marking, not your performance, was off.
