Why is my IELTS result withheld or delayed?

Usually for checks. IDP says results can be held beyond the normal release period for additional validation, random quality assurance, suspected malpractice or a technical issue. You may be asked for extra writing or speaking samples, or, rarely, to retake a component. Contact your test centre, watch your email and portal, and if a result is withheld after an investigation you can ask for reconsideration within 21 days.

The four common reasons

From IDP's withheld results page, which says results may be withheld beyond the standard 13-day release period to allow extra checks. IELTS on computer results usually arrive much sooner (ielts.org says most within 2 days), so a long silence after a computer test is a sign to contact the centre (ielts.org).

Reason (IDP)What it means
Additional validation of test performanceYour scores are checked further before release
Random quality assurance checksSome tests are selected for review at random
Suspected malpractice or test irregularityAn investigation is under way
Technical issues requiring investigationSomething in the test delivery needs checking

What the terms allow

IDP's terms say the IELTS Test Partners may withhold results temporarily or permanently, or cancel issued results, if they consider them unreliable because of suspected malpractice or any other irregularity. During a review you may be asked for additional writing and speaking samples, and in exceptional circumstances to retake one or more components. A result can also be cancelled after it is issued if an irregularity is found.

What to do

IDP's advice: contact the centre where you sat, read the terms, and monitor your email and candidate portal. If your result is withheld after an investigation, you can submit a request for reconsideration to Cambridge English, for a fee, within 21 days (IDP). You can also book another test; IDP notes you can choose which result to use if you end up with two.

A decision to withhold a result, or an unexplained delay, can also be raised through the IELTS complaints procedure (ielts.org).
