How Loyola Chicago handles TOEFL scores

The law school says scores must come directly from the testing service and are valid for two years from the test date. The undergraduate page dates its scale change to 1 January 2026, not 21 January.

Graduate School students without a bachelor's degree from an English-medium institution also sit an English placement test run by Loyola's ESL department after admission, separate from the TOEFL, and may be required to take ESL coursework, as the Graduate School catalogue explains.

TOEFL iBT score reports from January 2026 also carry a 1 to 6 band score; our guide to the new TOEFL score scale explains how the two scales appear on a report.

For comparison, the undergraduate page sets IELTS at 6.5, and the LLM page sets IELTS 7 with 7 in writing and reading.

If your TOEFL score is below Loyola Chicago's level

If you meet every other requirement but your TOEFL is too low, Loyola admits you through the International Conditional Admission Program (ICAP), which covers undergraduate study and all graduate and professional programmes except those of the Stritch School of Medicine. After completing the English Language Learning Program you do not need to resend a TOEFL score. The Applied Statistics FAQ adds that admission on probation below the cut-off may be possible case by case.

Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your Loyola Chicago programme page and in your offer letter, so check it there before you book a test.
