How Murdoch handles TOEFL scores

Murdoch's standard table says TOEFL iBT is not accepted if the test was taken between 26 July 2023 and 4 May 2024. Its course-specific tables say tests from that period are not accepted for applicants applying for an Australian student visa.

Murdoch gives its TOEFL figures on the 0 to 120 scale. Since January 2026 TOEFL iBT score reports also carry a 1 to 6 band score; see the new TOEFL score scale.

For comparison, the same page sets standard IELTS Academic at 6.0 with 6.0 in each band for undergraduate and postgraduate study, and 6.5 (6.0 in each band) for research degrees.

Your offer and your visa are separate. Home Affairs says that for a TOEFL iBT result to be valid for Australian visa purposes you must select 'Taking TOEFL for Australia' when you register, and it lists TOEFL iBT Home Edition among the online tests it does not accept (Home Affairs English page).

If your TOEFL score is below Murdoch's level

The page sets no conditional TOEFL score. It lists STAT Written English (140) and other tests as alternatives, and the course pages list Australian and overseas qualifications that can meet the English requirement.

Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your Murdoch programme page and in your offer letter, so check it there before you book a test.
