Can you pay for English lessons instead of IELTS for a New Zealand resident visa?

Yes, for some visas. Immigration New Zealand lets partners and dependent children aged 16 or older on skilled residence, business and some residence from work visas pay for ESOL classes instead of meeting the test score. Parent Resident Visa applicants and partners can do the same. The cost depends on test scores, except for parents, who pay only the lowest fee.

How the cost is worked out

If your partner or children do not pass the test, you pay INZ for ESOL classes, and INZ can approve the application once that payment is made. The family takes the classes after arriving in New Zealand.

The cost depends on each person's level: taking an approved test shows how much tuition they need, and a higher score means a lower charge. Anyone who cannot speak English at all, or does not take a test, pays the maximum. The total includes the class cost and Tertiary Education Commission administration costs.

Parent Resident Visa applicants pay only the lowest fee, even if they do not speak or understand English at all.

Who cannot use it

INZ says principal applicants for the Entrepreneur and Relocating Business resident visas cannot use the lesson option, and there are no English requirements for partners or children on visas not listed. Children under 16 never need to show English.

Rules change, sometimes at short notice. Confirm the current requirement on the INZ English lessons page before you book a test or apply. This guide restates the official page; it is not legal or immigration advice.

The same seven INZ-approved tests, sat in person and no more than 2 years old.
