The combined pre-sessional CAS
Rules ST 15.1 to 15.3 of Appendix Student let a higher education provider with a track record of compliance assign a single CAS for a pre-sessional course and a main course at degree level or above. ST 13.1 sets B1 for pre-sessional courses, against B2 for courses at bachelor's level or above.
| Condition | Rule |
|---|---|
| Length of the pre-sessional course | No longer than 3 months |
| Gap before the main course | Main course begins no more than 1 month after the pre-sessional ends |
| If you are already assessed at B2 | CAS must confirm an unconditional offer on the main course |
| If you are assessed at B1 | B1 assessed by a method other than the sponsor's own; CAS confirms the sponsor expects B2 by the end |
| Time added to your permission | 1 month before and 1 month after a pre-sessional course of under 6 months |
What counts as pre-sessional
The caseworker guidance describes a pre-sessional course as one that prepares you for your main course, usually through supplementary English language training and some background on the British education system. Foundation degrees, and courses that form an integral part of the main course or replace part of it, are not pre-sessional courses.
Appendix Student's level-of-study rule (ST 10.2) also accepts a pre-sessional course in English language at CEFR B2 or above.
Need a SELT for a UK visa?
Where the Home Office asks for a Secure English Language Test, IELTS for UKVI and PTE Academic UKVI are approved. Practise the format free.

If the combined CAS does not work
If a caseworker cannot grant both courses because one requirement is not met, the guidance says they must ask the sponsor whether it will sponsor you for the pre-sessional course only. If it agrees, you get permission for the pre-sessional course plus 1 month; if not, the application is refused.
Where the combined requirements are not met at all, you make a separate application for each course, and each must meet the full Student route rules, including the English requirement. Immigration rules change, sometimes at short notice. Confirm the current rule on the Appendix Student before you book a test or apply. Frequently asked questions
What IELTS level do I need for a pre-sessional course?+
The Student route sets CEFR B1 for pre-sessional courses. On a combined CAS that B1 must be assessed by a method other than your university's own assessment, so many students use a SELT.
Can my pre-sessional be longer than 3 months on one CAS?+
No. ST 15.1 caps the pre-sessional at 3 months for a combined CAS. Otherwise you need separate applications.
Is a foundation year a pre-sessional course?+
No. The caseworker guidance says foundation degrees and courses that form part of the main course are not pre-sessional courses.
What happens if I do not reach B2 by the end of the pre-sessional?+
The visa rules set what the CAS must confirm in advance; progression to the degree is then up to your university's conditions.
