Minimum scores for undergraduate consideration
These figures are from Providence College's international application requirements. They apply to students whose native language is not English. The TOEFL minimum depends on when you sat the test, and TOEFL Essential and TOEFL ITP are not accepted.
| Programme | IELTS | Other tests |
|---|---|---|
| Undergraduate | 7.0 (Academic test) | TOEFL iBT 90 before 21 January 2026, 5 on or after that date; Duolingo 120 |
Other tests and waivers
TOEFL iBT, IELTS Academic and Duolingo are the college's preferred tests. Other tests may be considered case by case, and the page names PTE Academic and the Cambridge English Qualifications as examples, but it gives no minimum for either.
Students who studied entirely in English throughout secondary school may qualify for a waiver. A request goes to the Office of Admission with evidence of why the requirement should be waived, and each request is decided case by case. The college still highly recommends sending a test score, saying it will enhance your application.

Sending scores and checking your case
Send scores to "Providence College Undergraduate Admissions". The page warns that sending them to the college in general may delay processing. It describes no conditional offer or pre-sessional English route, so plan to reach the minimum before you apply. Students asking for need-based aid must also submit the CSS Profile with the International Student Certification of Finances, and the college says it cannot guarantee meeting full need.
Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on the Providence College admissions page and in your offer letter, so check it there before you book a test.
Minimum vs competitive score
Where Providence College publishes an IELTS score, it is the minimum: the floor an application has to meet to be considered, not a score that guarantees an offer.
Competitive programmes, and courses with far more applicants than places, may expect more than the minimum, and some departments set their own overall or per-skill scores, often for writing or speaking. The course page has the final word, so check it before you book a test.
If you are close to the line, aim for a margin above it: one weak skill can miss the requirement even when the overall band clears it. Not sure where you stand? Take a free IELTS mock test and get a band for each skill.
