How SF State handles TOEFL scores

Graduate scores go to ETS institution code 4683 and are valid for two years from the test date. The graduate FAQ adds that some departments require higher TOEFL scores, and the Graduate Studies page warns that some programmes do not accept IELTS, PTE Academic or Duolingo in place of the TOEFL.

For undergraduates, the bulletin gives the institution code as 4684 and says Institutional TOEFL scores are not accepted because they do not include Speaking or Writing.

For comparison, the bulletin sets undergraduate IELTS at 6.0 overall, and the Graduate Studies page sets graduate IELTS at 6.5.

If your TOEFL score is below SF State's level

The Division of Graduate Studies does not offer conditional admission on English. It recommends enrolling at the campus American Language Institute (ALI) and applying once you meet the requirement. Undergraduates below the minimum can also enrol at the ALI, and those with three years of full-time study where English was the main language of instruction do not need a score.

Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your SF State programme page and in your offer letter, so check it there before you book a test.
