How do Skills for English results work, and how long are they valid?

Skills for English results are reported only as Pass or Fail, with no certificate; you put the Unique Reference Number (URN) in your visa application. PSI aims to release results within 14 days, and 28 days at most, although its SELT page says as little as 3 to 5 days. Results are valid for up to two years. Appeals cost $130 within 21 days.

Using the URN

A URN is generated for each attempt, and it is the only evidence the Home Office needs to find and verify your result (Skills for English FAQ). Gov.uk confirms the PSI reference appears as 'URN', that you must include it or risk refusal, and that SELT results are valid for two years from the date the test is awarded (gov.uk).

Skills for English also lets you share your score report with chosen institutions through its online verification portal at no cost (Skills for English).

If you fail

You can book another test once you have your result, though PSI recommends waiting at least 28 days to prepare. There is no refund for a failed test (Skills for English FAQ).

To change a booking, cancel more than 5 days ahead for an automatic refund and then rebook; cancellations less than 5 days ahead are not refunded (Skills for English FAQ). Rules and fees change. Check the test owner's own page for your country before you book or pay. This guide is general information, not official advice from the test owner.
