Minimum LanguageCert scores on the approved list

These minimums come from gov.uk's list of approved SELTs taken in the UK, linked from the SELT guidance; the list for tests outside the UK has the same LanguageCert scores. LanguageCert's Academic SELT and General SELT pages show the same B1, B2 and C1 minimums. You must reach the score in every skill at the level you need.

Which level each visa needs

Skilled Worker and Health and Care Worker applicants need B2 in reading, writing, speaking and listening; if you had the visa before 8 January 2026 and are extending, B1 applies (gov.uk, gov.uk). The High Potential Individual visa also needs B2 (gov.uk). Student visas need B2 at degree level and above, or B1 below degree level (gov.uk).

Family visas need A1 in speaking and listening for the first application, with higher levels at extension (gov.uk). Settlement and citizenship need B1 or above (gov.uk). Nationals of majority English-speaking countries such as the USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand are exempt on most routes.

Academic SELT vs General SELT

LanguageCert describes Academic SELT as its four-skill test for a UK study visa and General SELT as its four-skill test for a UK work visa (LanguageCert). Academic SELT covers B1 to C2 and takes 2 hours and 34 minutes; General SELT covers A2 to C1 and takes 2 hours and 22 minutes. Both are taken on computer at a secure test centre, with results in five working days (LanguageCert, LanguageCert).

Since 6 July 2025 these two replaced the LanguageCert ESOL SELT four-skills test; older four-skills results stay valid for two years (gov.uk). Compare with IELTS in LanguageCert vs IELTS for UK visa, or try an IELTS for UKVI practice test.

Validity and your reference number

SELT results are valid for two years from the date the test is awarded, and you must quote your SELT reference number, shown as "Candidate URN" on LanguageCert results, in your application (gov.uk). For citizenship, gov.uk allows an expired B1 or higher qualification if it was accepted when you settled (gov.uk).
