Do you need a study permit for an English course in Canada?

Not if the program lasts 6 months or less. IRCC lists short-term students among the people who can study without a permit. The trade-off is work: without a study permit you cannot work while studying in Canada. Longer English programs need a study permit, and IRCC's eligibility rules set no English test score for one.

The short-term student exception

IRCC's study without a permit page says you do not need a study permit if you are coming to Canada for a program that lasts 6 months or less. Other exceptions include family or staff of accredited foreign representatives, minor children in Canada, and temporary residents taking French language and culture or settlement courses.

Why some short-course students still get a permit

IRCC says that if you have a study permit and are a full-time student at a DLI, you may be able to work on or off campus, and the permit will say so. Without a permit you cannot work while studying and would need a separate work permit.

Immigration rules change, sometimes at short notice. Confirm the current rule on the IRCC study without a permit page before you book a test or apply. This guide is general information, not legal or immigration advice.

Moving on to a degree

If the English course leads into a college or university program, ask the DLI for a conditional letter of acceptance; see conditional LOA with ESL. If you plan to work in Canada after graduating, check the language rules for the post-graduation work permit before you choose a test.
