How TAFE NSW handles TOEFL scores
From 21 January 2026, TAFE NSW accepts only TOEFL iBT Australia, and you must select 'Taking TOEFL for Australia' when you register. It does not accept tests delivered entirely online, and names TOEFL iBT Home Edition as an example.
TAFE NSW gives its TOEFL figures on the 0 to 120 scale. Since January 2026 TOEFL iBT score reports also carry a 1 to 6 band score; see the new TOEFL score scale.
For comparison, the same document pairs TOEFL 79 with Academic IELTS 6.5 (no band below 6.0) and TOEFL 67 with IELTS 6.0 (no band below 5.5).
Your offer and your visa are separate. Home Affairs says that for a TOEFL iBT result to be valid for Australian visa purposes you must select 'Taking TOEFL for Australia' when you register, and it lists TOEFL iBT Home Edition among the online tests it does not accept (Home Affairs English page).

If your TOEFL score is below TAFE NSW's level
TAFE NSW says you can study an English course at a TAFE NSW English Language Centre before your main course. Completing TAFE NSW English for Academic Purposes is listed among the ways to meet the IELTS 6.5 level.
Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your TAFE NSW programme page and in your offer letter, so check it there before you book a test.
