Tulane TOEFL minimums by school
From the School of Science and Engineering graduate admissions page and the School of Public Health admissions FAQ.
| Level or programme | TOEFL iBT minimum | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Science and Engineering, graduate (MS and PhD) | 87 overall | Applies to all applicants who are not exempt |
| Public Health and Tropical Medicine | 4.5 or higher (new scale) | TOEFL or IELTS results required |
How Tulane handles TOEFL scores
The School of Science and Engineering accepts the TOEFL iBT, and admitted students may also be asked to confirm their English before arrival. The page does not give section minimums or a TOEFL code.
New TOEFL iBT score reports also carry a 1 to 6 band score alongside the 0 to 120 scale; our TOEFL new score scale guide explains it.
For comparison, Science and Engineering asks for IELTS Academic 7.0 overall, and Public Health for an IELTS band of 6.5.

If your TOEFL score is below Tulane's level
Science and Engineering exempts you if you hold a bachelor's degree or higher, or have at least two years of full-time study, at an accredited university in the US or in a country where English is both the everyday language and the language of instruction. Public Health waives the test for US citizens and permanent residents among others. Neither page lists a conditional admission route.
Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your Tulane programme page and in your offer letter, so check it there before you book a test.
