How UC Irvine handles TOEFL scores

For graduate admission, TOEFL scores more than two years old are not acceptable. The international applicants page says applicants without a qualifying English-medium degree must take and pass an approved test, TOEFL or IELTS.

For undergraduates, UC does not accept MyBest TOEFL scores: only the highest composite score from a single sitting counts. You self-report scores in the UC application and, if admitted, send official scores only to the campus where you will enrol; they must still be valid when you send them.

For comparison, the Graduate Division policies set IELTS at 7 overall with no module below 6, and the UC undergraduate page sets IELTS at 6.5.

If your TOEFL score is below UC Irvine's level

Graduate programmes may admit some applicants provisionally, but not pending receipt of TOEFL scores unless an unofficial score has been submitted, and provisions must be met within the first four weeks of the second quarter. Graduate applicants are exempt if they hold an undergraduate or master's degree from an institution where English was the sole language of instruction according to the World Higher Education Database. Transfer students can meet the UC requirement through English composition courses instead.

Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your UC Irvine programme page and in your offer letter, so check it there before you book a test.
