How UNC-Chapel Hill handles TOEFL scores

Undergraduate admissions accepts the TOEFL and the TOEFL iBT Home Edition, and its TOEFL code is C182. It treats test scores as one factor among many, never the sole reason for a decision.

The Graduate School accepts the iBT, iBT Home Edition and iBT Paper Edition, but not TOEFL MyBest. Send scores to code 5816 with no department code. Scores are reportable for two years from the exam date, and older results cannot be considered. If you want more than one sitting reviewed, send each set of official scores.

For comparison, the undergraduate page says strong applicants typically score 7.5 or higher on IELTS Academic, and the Graduate School instructions recommend IELTS 7.

If your TOEFL score is below UNC-Chapel Hill's level

The Graduate School exempts applicants from countries where English is the sole official language of instruction, listing countries such as Australia, Canada (except Quebec), India, Ireland, Nigeria and the UK. Neither page describes a conditional admission or pathway route for a low TOEFL score.

Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your UNC-Chapel Hill programme page and in your offer letter, so check it there before you book a test.
