How the University of Alberta handles TOEFL scores

The undergraduate page says TOEFL Essentials and the Home Edition are not accepted, and adds that the Home Edition will not be accepted for undergraduate admissions during the 2027 to 2028 academic year. Language test results more than two years old are not accepted. The University of Alberta is itself an official TOEFL test centre.

At graduate level, scores are sent directly to the department, and results more than two years old cannot be verified, so you would normally have to retake the test.

For comparison, both the undergraduate page and the graduate manual set IELTS Academic at 6.5 with no band below 6.0.

If your TOEFL score is below the University of Alberta's level

Five undergraduate faculties (ALES, Arts, KSR, Native Studies and Augustana) offer a Bridging Program for applicants who meet everything except English proficiency; you take English for Academic Purposes courses in first year while earning degree credit. Not every programme in those faculties offers it.

For graduate study, a department can recommend the EAP 500 course for an applicant with at least TOEFL 76 and 18 in each skill on the internet-based test, either completed before applying or as a condition of admission.

Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your University of Alberta programme page and in your offer letter, so check it there before you book a test.
