Exemptions
Holders of an accredited bachelor's or master's degree from a recognised institution in Flanders, and under the Benelux decision in Belgium, the Netherlands or Luxembourg, are exempt.
The admission board may also exempt you if you completed at least one academic year (60 ECTS) in an English-taught programme, but it may require that those credits or your diploma come from Australia, English-speaking Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, the UK or the USA. Duolingo is not listed.

Test date and visa applicants
For enrolment in 2026-2027 the exam date on the certificate must be at least 1 January 2024; older certificates are not accepted. If you need a visa for Belgium, you must apply for admission before the deadline the university sets for visa applicants.
Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your University of Antwerp programme page and in your offer, so check it there before you book a test.
Minimum vs competitive score
Where the University of Antwerp publishes an IELTS score, it is the minimum: the floor an application has to meet to be considered, not a score that guarantees an offer.
Competitive programmes, and courses with far more applicants than places, may expect more than the minimum, and some departments set their own overall or per-skill scores, often for writing or speaking. The course page has the final word, so check it before you book a test.
