IELTS requirements: compare the scope, not just the number
| Institution and scope | Published IELTS position | What to check next |
|---|---|---|
| KU Leuven: general English proficiency rule | Academic 6.5 overall; One Skill Retake not accepted | Your programme may require higher scores or specific subscores. |
| Ghent: most English-taught master's programmes | B2 is generally required; its English-proof table lists Academic 6.0 for B2 | Check the programme-specific requirements; the general B2 rule is not enough for every course. |
| VUB: general English-language requirement | Academic 6.5 overall and 6.0 in every component; One Skill Retake accepted | Faculties may require a higher level or apply programme-specific exceptions. |

Decide whether a retake will solve your actual shortfall
Write down the required overall band, any individual-skill minimum, permitted test format, certificate validity and submission deadline. A strong overall result can still miss a component requirement. Before paying for a retake, check whether that exact result format is accepted.
- For a weak Reading result, record the question type and the passage evidence you missed. Repeat the skill on a new passage instead of memorising the old key.
- For Listening, compare your first attempt with the transcript and note whether each error came from meaning, spelling or a missed word.
- For Writing, separate answering the task from language accuracy. Compare your outline and paragraph development with a sample, then revise your own answer.
- For Speaking, record an answer and listen for unclear ideas or long pauses. Recording and playback alone do not provide an AI band score.
A first week of IELTS preparation around your course target
| When | Practice | Keep this evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Days 1–2 | Complete one Academic Reading set and one Listening set, then review the explanations. | A short error list grouped by question type; a small drill percentage is not a full-test band. |
| Days 3–4 | Try a fresh set in your weakest type and record a Part 2 speaking answer. | Whether the same mistakes recur and which spoken ideas need clearer support. |
| Days 5–6 | Draft a Task 2 essay, review a model, then revise. Study an Academic Task 1 report separately. | Changes to your own argument and a checklist of missing Task 1 information. |
| Day 7 | Use fresh questions to review your weakest skills and choose next week's priorities. | Your practice results alongside the course's overall and component requirements. |

Test fees and centres: check after choosing the accepted test
Use the linked Belgium fee and test-centre guides for booking research. Confirm the current amount and available session with the provider before paying. Taking a test in Belgium does not make its result acceptable to every Belgian programme; acceptance and booking are separate checks.

Practise IELTS Academic →Frequently asked questions
Is IELTS 6.5 enough for every university in Belgium?+
No. Check the named course's overall score, any component minimum and accepted test format. The comparison above covers specific institutional policies, not a country-wide score.
Can I use One Skill Retake at both KU Leuven and VUB?+
Their published policies differ: KU Leuven rejects it, while VUB's general English rule accepts it. Check your specific programme before booking a retake.
Does an IELTS practice result prove I meet an admission requirement?+
No. Use practice to identify weaknesses. Admission decisions depend on the institution's required evidence and its other conditions.
