University English requirements

What IELTS score do you need for the University of Liège (ULiège)?

For non-EU master's applicants, the University of Liège gives a firm IELTS minimum only for HEC Liège's English programmes: 6, with TOEFL iBT 83. Elsewhere it states a CEFR level and an IELTS range, B2 at 5.5 to 6.5 for English-taught Sociology, Migration and Ethnic Studies, so the minimum depends on your programme. Tests must be under 2 years old.Source: University of Liège (ULiège) official English requirements · checked 4 November 2026

Exemptions and test age

Native speakers, nationals of a country where the language is official, and those with a degree or a year of higher education in that language are exempt. HEC Liège exempts applicants whose secondary education, or at least one year of higher education, was in English, and accepts only the listed tests.

Only tests that carry a photo and are less than 2 years old are accepted. For Applied Sciences the page asks for a standardised B2 test without giving a score, and the Environmental Management joint degree with Luxembourg is listed at B2 with no score.

How to find your programme's score

Because the page uses ranges for two programmes, treat the top of the range as the safe target unless your programme page names a figure. Medicine, Architecture, Veterinary Medicine, Law, Gembloux and Psychology list no English requirement beyond the general B2 rule.

Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your ULiège programme page and in your offer, so check it there before you book a test.

Minimum vs competitive score

Where the University of Liège (ULiège) publishes an IELTS score, it is the minimum: the floor an application has to meet to be considered, not a score that guarantees an offer.

Competitive programmes, and courses with far more applicants than places, may expect more than the minimum, and some departments set their own overall or per-skill scores, often for writing or speaking. The course page has the final word, so check it before you book a test.

If you are close to the line, aim for a margin above it: one weak skill can miss the requirement even when the overall band clears it. Not sure where you stand? Take a free IELTS mock test and get a band for each skill.
