PTE for Belgium: check university acceptance before you practise

PTE Academic appears in Ghent's accepted English proofs, but it is absent from KU Leuven's explicitly exhaustive test list. Start with your intended programme's policy. A PTE-to-IELTS conversion cannot establish acceptance where the programme does not list PTE.
  • Test to verify: PTE Academic
  • Acceptance: Institution-specific
  • Ghent B2 mapping: PTE 59–75

Where PTE is listed, and where you need another answer

Institution or programmePublished evidenceHow to use it
Ghent: English-proof level tablePTE Academic 59–75 maps to B2, 76–84 to C1 and 85+ to C2Most English-taught master's require B2, but individual programme rules take precedence.
Ghent/VUB joint Maritime Science programmeIts admissions page explicitly lists PTE Academic 59+ for the stated English requirementThis is one programme example for non-Flemish applicants, not a rule for every VUB or Ghent course. Other entry criteria apply.
KU Leuven: general test listPTE is absent; the page states that only its listed tests are acceptedThe general policy does not support submitting PTE. Check the programme policy before choosing another accepted test.
VUB: general English rulePTE is not listed among its standard test options; programme exceptions can applyAbsence from this page is not proof of a university-wide prohibition. Ask the named programme about your proposed evidence.
The Ghent ranges describe its language-level mapping, not maximum acceptable scores or universal Belgian cut-offs. The PTE examples name Academic; do not substitute Core or an IELTS conversion for the evidence your programme requests.

Confirm the requirement before building a PTE plan

  • Save the current programme admissions page and the academic year it covers. Check the exact test name, overall score and any individual-skill requirements.
  • If only a CEFR level is stated, use that institution's accepted-proof table and check for a programme-specific override.
  • If PTE is not named, ask admissions whether PTE Academic is accepted for your particular course and intake, and request the required score and evidence deadline.
  • Do not treat a test-centre listing, a general conversion chart or acceptance by another Belgian university as confirmation for your application.

Prepare for PTE Academic after acceptance is confirmed

Practice focusWhat to doHow to review it
Read AloudRecord one passage, then repeat a new passage after reviewing clarity and phrasing.Listen for missing words and rushed stretches. An optional speech estimate is separate from a full PTE result.
Write from DictationListen once and type the sentence before checking the answer.Keep an error list for omitted words, spelling and endings; practise those patterns on new items.
Summarize Group DiscussionNote each speaker's main contribution and record a summary in your own words.Compare your coverage with the sample. This Academic task is not part of Core.
Respond to a SituationSelect the Academic timing and answer for the listener and purpose in the prompt.Check whether your response addresses the situation clearly, rather than repeating a memorised script.
Write EssayDraft your own response, check its length and form, and then study the model.Revise the argument and supporting examples. A form check does not evaluate all writing traits.

Start with one task a day and keep a brief record of the error and the next action. At the end of the week, try fresh questions in the same areas. Objective answer checks, model answers and full AI scoring are different features; follow the account and usage conditions shown on each page.

Frequently asked questions

Is PTE accepted across Belgium?+

Acceptance depends on the institution and programme. Ghent publishes PTE Academic level mappings; KU Leuven's exhaustive general list does not include it. Verify your own course before booking.

Is PTE 59 enough for every Belgian master's?+

No. Ghent maps 59–75 to B2 and the Maritime Science example explicitly lists 59+, but other programmes can set different evidence or score requirements.

Does a missing PTE listing always mean it is prohibited?+

No. Distinguish an explicitly exhaustive accepted-test list, such as KU Leuven's, from a general page that allows programme exceptions. Seek a programme-specific answer when the evidence is incomplete.

Can I use an IELTS conversion to prove my PTE is accepted?+

No. A comparison of scores does not establish acceptance. The institution must accept the test you actually took.
