English requirements by master's
Figures are from Hohenheim's programme pages, linked in the first column.
| Programme | IELTS | Other proof |
|---|---|---|
| Bioeconomy | 6.5 in all sections | TOEFL iBT 90; Duolingo 125; CAE; UNIcert II (good) |
| Environmental Science: Soil, Water and Biodiversity | 6.5 overall (Academic) | TOEFL iBT 90 or 4.5; Duolingo 125 |
| International Business and Economics | Accepted, no score on page | TOEFL or secondary school diploma |
Waivers
Bioeconomy accepts an English-language bachelor's from an EU member state or from Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the USA, the UK, Switzerland and several Caribbean countries, Belize or Guyana. A degree from India, Pakistan, Nigeria or Bangladesh is not on that list.
Bioeconomy says a secondary school leaving certificate is not sufficient proof. International Business and Economics exempts native English speakers and applicants who completed an English-only degree.

APS, deadlines and how to check
Applicants from India, China and Vietnam need an APS certificate. For Bioeconomy, the degree certificate itself can follow and must be submitted by 15 December of the admission year.
Your German student visa is handled by the German embassy or consulate where you apply, not by the University of Hohenheim. This guide covers the University of Hohenheim's admission rule only. Our IELTS for Germany guide covers the visa side and test fees.
English requirements in Germany are set per programme and can change between intakes. The score that binds you is the one on your University of Hohenheim programme page and in your admission letter, so check it there before you book a test.
Minimum vs competitive score
Where the University of Hohenheim publishes an IELTS score, it is the minimum: the floor an application has to meet to be considered, not a score that guarantees an offer.
Competitive programmes, and courses with far more applicants than places, may expect more than the minimum, and some departments set their own overall or per-skill scores, often for writing or speaking. The course page has the final word, so check it before you book a test.
If you are close to the line, aim for a margin above it: one weak skill can miss the requirement even when the overall band clears it. Not sure where you stand? Take a free IELTS mock test and get a band for each skill.
