When you need no test
UKZN is an English-medium university. Its language policy requires proof from applicants who are not from an English-speaking country or have not been educated in one.
You can show competence with a pass equivalent to English Higher Grade at South African Senior Certificate level, as set by the South African Matriculation Board. A pass in English at GCE A-level, at O-level with a C symbol or higher, or in the International Baccalaureate also counts.

Language Centre, SAQA and how to check
The UKZN Language Centre provides a testing service and English courses. Students whose test results are comparable to the required IELTS or TOEFL scores can then apply to a degree programme. Those who fall short are advised to spend one or two semesters learning English at the centre.
UKZN's international selection page says postgraduate applications are considered only with a South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) evaluation of your post-school qualifications, and certificates not in English need official translations. The guide also says medical cover from a UKZN-recommended scheme, CompCare or Momentum Health, is compulsory.
Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your UKZN programme page and in your offer, so check it there before you book a test.
Minimum vs competitive score
Where University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) publishes an IELTS score, it is the minimum: the floor an application has to meet to be considered, not a score that guarantees an offer.
Competitive programmes, and courses with far more applicants than places, may expect more than the minimum, and some departments set their own overall or per-skill scores, often for writing or speaking. The course page has the final word, so check it before you book a test.
If you are close to the line, aim for a margin above it: one weak skill can miss the requirement even when the overall band clears it. Not sure where you stand? Take a free IELTS mock test and get a band for each skill.
