How Notre Dame handles TOEFL scores

The undergraduate figures are presented as strongly recommended scores, not hard cut-offs. Undergraduate TOEFL scores must be sent directly by ETS, not uploaded to the applicant portal, and Notre Dame does not accept the TOEFL iBT Special Home Edition; applicants with no access to a test centre are asked to take the Duolingo English Test instead. The TOEFL and College Board code is 1841.

The Graduate School says TOEFL scores are valid for two years, uses the same code 1841 (no department code needed) and accepts self-reported scores in the application, with any offer depending on official scores. Applicants whose Speaking score is below the minimum are still encouraged to apply, and all applications are reviewed.

For comparison, the same pages give IELTS 7.5 for undergraduates and 7.0 for the Graduate School.

If your TOEFL score is below Notre Dame's level

Undergraduates do not need an English test with SAT Evidence-Based Reading and Writing 650 or ACT English or Reading 26, and those at English-only high schools can ask admissions about a waiver. Applicants can also add an InitialView or Vericant interview. The Graduate School waives the test after two academic years at an English-medium institution.

Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your Notre Dame programme page and in your offer letter, so check it there before you book a test.
