University English requirements

What IELTS score do you need for the University of Richmond?

The University of Richmond lists IELTS 7.5 as its competitive score for undergraduate applicants whose first language is not English, alongside TOEFL iBT 100 (5.5 on the updated scale) and Duolingo 135. Richmond says these are competitive scores, not minimums, so a lower score can still be considered. IELTS Indicator is accepted, and several waivers apply.Source: University of Richmond official English requirements · checked 29 October 2026

Waivers and what does not count

Richmond waives the requirement for students with at least four years in an academically rigorous English-medium secondary school, ACT English 28, SAT Evidence-Based Reading and Writing 660, or an A or B equivalent grade in AP, IB (5 to 7) or A-level English. A waiver is applied only after an initial review confirms it, which can take many weeks, but a pending waiver does not stop your application being read.

PTE Academic is not on the list. Test-optional admission covers the SAT and ACT only, not English testing. InitialView and Vericant interviews are optional supplements and do not replace a test or waiver.

Sending scores

English test results need an official score report; self-reporting is allowed only for the SAT and ACT. The TOEFL institution code is 5569. For IELTS, give the exact institution address even for e-delivery: University of Richmond Undergraduate Admission, 142 UR Drive, Richmond, VA 23173. If sending through the testing agency is a financial burden, Richmond accepts official reports sent by your high school.

Requirements vary by programme and change between admission cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your Richmond programme page and in your admission letter, so check it there before you book a test.

Minimum vs competitive score

Where the University of Richmond publishes an IELTS score, it is the minimum: the floor an application has to meet to be considered, not a score that guarantees an offer.

Competitive programmes, and courses with far more applicants than places, may expect more than the minimum, and some departments set their own overall or per-skill scores, often for writing or speaking. The course page has the final word, so check it before you book a test.

If you are close to the line, aim for a margin above it: one weak skill can miss the requirement even when the overall band clears it. Not sure where you stand? Take a free IELTS mock test and get a band for each skill.
