How St. Thomas handles TOEFL scores
All undergraduate international students take an English composition placement test on arrival unless they have a verifiable TOEFL iBT score of 100 or above, IELTS 7.5 or above, or a US bachelor's degree. St. Thomas reserves the right to require additional English testing. The graduate page gives TOEFL school code 6110.
The graduate figure is given on the 0 to 120 scale only. TOEFL iBT score reports issued since January 2026 also carry a 1 to 6 band score; see our guide to the new TOEFL score scale.
For comparison, St. Thomas asks undergraduates for IELTS 6.0 and graduate applicants for IELTS Academic 6.5.

If your TOEFL score is below St. Thomas's level
Undergraduates can also qualify for direct admission through ELS Language Center Level 112 with a GPA of 2.25, ACT English and Reading 21, SAT Evidence-Based Reading and Writing 500, or transfer of 28 or more credits from a US college with a GPA of 2.75.
