University English requirements

What IELTS score do you need for the University of Tsukuba?

The University of Tsukuba's English-taught Integrated Design Engineering (IDE) degree asks IELTS Academic 6.5 or TOEFL iBT 80 (4.0 on the new scale). Its Japanese-taught colleges for privately funded international students ask less English: IELTS 5.5 for Humanities and Comparative Culture, 5.0 for Medical Sciences, and any level for many others, alongside the EJU and JLPT.Source: University of Tsukuba official English requirements · checked 29 October 2026

Waivers

IDE applicants whose high school was taught in English for three years do not have to submit TOEFL, TOEIC or IELTS, though Tsukuba recommends it. For the Japanese-taught colleges, three years of English-medium high school counts as having taken the English test once you submit the School Information Form.

IDE applicants need 12 years of schooling outside Japan by 31 August 2027 and a recommendation. Selection is a document review followed by individual interviews.

Other English programmes

The guidebook also lists the Bachelor's Program in Global Issues, taught in English with October entry, which takes a few students each year and publishes its own requirements. Check that programme's site and guidelines for its English level.

Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your Tsukuba programme page and in your offer letter, so check it there before you book a test.

Minimum vs competitive score

Where the University of Tsukuba publishes an IELTS score, it is the minimum: the floor an application has to meet to be considered, not a score that guarantees an offer.

Competitive programmes, and courses with far more applicants than places, may expect more than the minimum, and some departments set their own overall or per-skill scores, often for writing or speaking. The course page has the final word, so check it before you book a test.

If you are close to the line, aim for a margin above it: one weak skill can miss the requirement even when the overall band clears it. Not sure where you stand? Take a free IELTS mock test and get a band for each skill.
