University English requirements

What IELTS score do you need for the University of Tokyo?

The University of Tokyo has no single English score for its English-taught degrees. PEAK took its final students in fall 2026. The new UTokyo College of Design, due to open in September 2027, expects IELTS Academic above 6.0, TOEFL iBT above 80 (4 on the new scale) or Duolingo above 110. Graduate programmes set their own bars, such as IPADS welcoming IELTS 7.0.

PEAK has ended: what UTokyo offers in English now

UTokyo's admissions page says final admissions to Programs in English at Komaba (PEAK) ended with the fall 2026 enrollment. Its English-taught undergraduate routes are now the Global Science Course, a transfer into the third year of the Faculty of Science after at least two years at a university outside Japan, and the UTokyo College of Design, a five-year combined bachelor's and master's taught entirely in English from September 2027. The college is under review by Japan's education ministry and may change.

UTokyo College of Design: expected English scores

The College of Design admissions overview lists these designated tests. Scores must come from tests taken on or after 1 January 2025, and UTokyo says expected scores are not cut-offs: decisions are holistic.

Exemptions, Indian boards and graduate programmes

Route B applicants may skip the test after English-medium education for at least three of the final four school years; bilingual programmes do not count. For academic entry, CBSE Class XII applicants are expected to average 93 or above in their top five subjects (94 for CISCE, NIOS and state boards), and UTokyo recommends that state-board applicants take an English test.

Graduate programmes set their own rules. The International Program in Agricultural Development Studies (IPADS) has no official cut-off but welcomes TOEFL iBT 98 or IELTS 7.0 and above, refuses IELTS One Skill Retake, and for 2027 entry accepts tests from 1 December 2024 (Round One) or 1 April 2025 (Round Two). It waives the test only for degrees taught entirely in English in Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa, the USA or the UK; English-taught degrees elsewhere, such as India, can use Duolingo instead with a university letter.

UTokyo's English pages we read do not set a separate English score for the student visa or permit. Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your UTokyo programme page and in your admission decision, so check it there before you book a test.
