Degree in English as proof

A bachelor's, master's or doctoral degree taught in English in Finland, the EU/EEA or a listed country counts, including offshore campuses and articulation awards such as 1+3 or 2+2. The list includes India, Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, the UK, the US, Canada and Australia. Pakistan and Bangladesh are not on it.

At least 15 ECTS of bachelor's-level study in English in the EU/EEA, UK, Switzerland, US, Canada, Australia or New Zealand, or a degree with English as the major subject, also counts. Duolingo is not on the list.

Validity and dates

Language tests are valid for two years from the test date and must be valid on the day you submit your application. Results for the main round are published by 31 May 2027, and successful applicants must accept their place by 13 July 2027.

Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your University of Vaasa programme page and in your offer, so check it there before you book a test.

Minimum vs competitive score

Where the University of Vaasa publishes an IELTS score, it is the minimum: the floor an application has to meet to be considered, not a score that guarantees an offer.

Competitive programmes, and courses with far more applicants than places, may expect more than the minimum, and some departments set their own overall or per-skill scores, often for writing or speaking. The course page has the final word, so check it before you book a test.

If you are close to the line, aim for a margin above it: one weak skill can miss the requirement even when the overall band clears it. Not sure where you stand? Take a free IELTS mock test and get a band for each skill.
