What TOEFL score do you need for Washington University in St. Louis?

Official scores must come directly from the test agency and be less than two years old at the application deadline or when you submit. WashU does not accept super-scored results such as TOEFL MyBest. Some schools and programmes set higher minimums than the university policy.

Undergraduates send TOEFL scores to code 6929. Tests taken in December 2026 are the last accepted for fall 2027 entry, or October for Early Action or Early Decision I.

For comparison, the OISS policy sets IELTS Academic at 6.5, while undergraduate admissions says competitive applicants show IELTS 7.0.

Neither page describes conditional admission. Exemptions from the university policy are reviewed case by case and must be approved by the Senior Vice Provost for Graduate Education and International Affairs. Undergraduates with three or more years in an English-medium programme or US high school and strong results may be exempted, and admissions encourages third-party interviews such as InitialView.

Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your WashU programme page and in your offer letter, so check it there before you book a test.
